Sinus Lift Elevators
Sinus lift elevators are specialized hand instruments designed to gently detach and raise the Schneiderian membrane from the floor of the maxillary sinus without causing tears or perforations. Featuring blunt, non-cutting tips and varying anatomical angles, they allow surgeons to safely navigate the delicate interior contours of the sinus cavity.
🔳 Types of Sinus Lift Elevators
▫️ Lateral Window Elevators: Broad, gently curved, spade- or spoon-like tips angled (anterior, posterior, medial) to maneuver through a lateral access window.
▫️ Crestal (Transcrestal) Elevators: Slim, straight, or slightly offset tips designed to work through a narrow vertical socket drill hole (crestal approach).
▫️ Malleable Elevators: Fabricated from flexible alloys allowing surgeons to bend the working end to match unique sinus shapes or bypass bony septa.
▫️ Hydraulic / Water-Lift Elevators: Hollow-shafted instruments designed to deliver pressurized saline beneath the membrane to assist in hydro-dissection.
🔘 Primary Clinical Applications
🔹 Peripheral Membrane Detachment: Gently peeling the sinus lining away from the bony rim immediately surrounding the surgical window.
🔹 Cavity Expansion: Reaching deeper into the anterior, posterior, and medial walls of the sinus cavity to create adequate space for bone graft material.
🔹 Membrane Protection & Retraction: Retracting the lifted lining upward while the graft material is placed and packed against the floor.
🔹 Tactile Feedback: Providing the surgeon with fine tactile feel to detect bone variations, septa, or impending membrane stress before a tear occurs.
